Indians have also become very conscious about their looks and well-being as a lot of people have been opting for face-lift, rhinoplasty and liposuction these days, an expert revealed during the final day of Gemscon-2014, the alumni meet held at Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College on Saturday.
During a seminar, Dr. Sanjeev Bhatia, cosmetic surgeon from Lucknow, said that cosmetic surgeries are not limited to just accidental cases, infact they are being widely opted by people, both females and males who want to look good. "Cosmetic surgery is a way to improve one's physical appearance thus increasing self-esteem of the person. Anti-ageing techniques such as facelift, cheek lift, wrinkle treatment, chin surgery etc have become quite common. Eyebrow/forehead rejuvenation, breast enhancement, rhinoplasty or nose upliftment, liposuction and abdominoplasty or 'tummy tuck' is also being preferred by many," the doctor said.
Dr Bhatia said that people set to tie the knot come to him for enhancement of their look. "In the past few years, cosmetic surgery was a thing which was not readily accepted by the society, however now it has become a need for many. Girls persuing career in modelling come for a beauty treatment, even many youngsters opt for look enhancement treatment before getting married," he said.
People from different countries come to India for cosmetic surgeries as it is much cheaper here when compared to other regions of the world, the expert added."People from Bangladesh, Nepal, Malaysia and even from the USA come to us for beauty treatment. The average cost of abdominoplasty in US is approx 70,000 dollars, whereas it is only Rs 5 lakh here. This is one reason why people come here. Secondly, the success rate is also high in our country, thus attracting customers," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Dr. Vinod Kumar, professor, department of orthopaedics at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, talked about current scenario of 'Cartilage injury in young adults and knee replacement surgery'. He cautioned that if ligament fracture or cartilage rupture is not treated properly during the young age, it might result in replacement of that particular joint later in life. "If a knee joint cartilage is ruptured at a young age then it can be replaced or treated with stem cell therapy. But if not treated properly it might give you pain in old age," he said.
The doctor asserted that the group of people suffering from arthritis or childhood injuries is the one, which undergo joint replacement treatment. "No one wants to suffer or take pains at any point of life. Knee replacement has become very common in India. It costs between Rs 2.5--Rs 4 lakh for one joint replacement and people are widely undergoing the treatment," he added.
